No Sew Bow-Tie Ribbon Statement Necklace Tutorial

Bow-Tie Statement Necklace
It's Pretty Swanky & Completely NO SEW!
Ladies, Heat Up Your Glue Guns...

Gather the Following Supplies:
  • 1 Primary Fabric
I only used a small amount, slightly bigger than a credit card, but it's really your call. Although I think if you go too large you are playing close to clown territory, but that's completely up to you. This is a good use for remnants.
  • 1 Secondary Fabric
Only a smidgen is used, seriously about 1/4"x3" - great for tiny pieces you just can't seem to part with...
  • About 2 Feet of Ribbon
To be cut equally and used for necklace chain. I recently inherited a mass amount of ribbon in 1 foot increments that has finished edges, (crazy, right?) You'll want to finish at least one edge of your ribbon. How you go about that is up to you - you could melt an edge over a candle, fold over and hot glue or sew (which kind of takes the no sew aspect away,) it's your call.
  • Various Beads
These are to add to the ribbon chain as you see fit. We both know that you have beads that you covet and don't use, why not try them here? You're not going to be gluing them, so you're really not committing to a permanent place for them...
  • Various Buttons
These are also to add to the ribbon chain, make sure the holes are large enough to fit through the ribbon. Same this about the beads goes for buttons, you can always swap them out.
  • Your Trusty Fabric Scissors
Invest in These if You are Even Moderately Serious About Crafting, Major Time Saver!

  • Glue Gun
Honestly, I don't trust glue guns. Well, I take that back, I have come to terms with my glue gun and don't trust the glue guns of others. So, however you feel about glue guns, you're going to need one to make this a quick and dirty no sew project...
Step 1
  • Cut a piece of your primary fabric that is slightly larger than a credit card, this will give you a bow tie the size of the example. Feel free to play around with the size of this piece.
Step 2
  • Cut a piece of your secondary fabric that is about 1/4"-1/2" wide and around 3" long.
Step 3:
  • Fold the piece of primary fabric like a fan in about 1/4" increments.
When you finish your folding your fabric should resemble a bow-tie - or the photo above - whichever you prefer!

Step 4
  • This is where the hot glue becomes an issue. Take the complimentary fabric and begin to wrap it around your bow-tie. Place a dot of the glue where you place to fabric to start, I recommend the side of the bow, then another on the opposite side. Continue to wrap the fabric around the bow securing ever so often with glue dots until you come to the end, then glue the end securely.
When you are finished gluing your bow-tie should look similar to the photo above... Don't worry, mine is also covered in glue strings, they just don't show up on photos, they can easily be picked off. :D

Step 5
  • Divide your ribbon into two equal lengths. If you pattern is only on one side this is where you need to start paying attention. Select your least favorite side of your bow-tie, deem this the back. Glue your two lengths onto the back side of the bow, pattern facing out, in a somewhat symmetrical fashion. You may want to pin this first and see what it looks like from the front, as it's hard to go back after you've glued.
Your bow-tie with it's ribbon necklace should look something like this!

Step 6
  • Now it's time to add your beads and buttons - and TA-DA - you're finished. Place this lovely necklace around your neck and secure with a loose double knot. Congrats - you have a fabulous no-sew bow-tie statement necklace!

Have fun making this project your own!

  1. This looks like a fun project! Does any kind of fabric work or is one superior to another for this?

  2. Sarah,
    Great Question!
You could use any fabric you would like - I used a tighter weave to make the project no sew and avoid finishing the edges.
If you choose a fabric that would ravel you would finish the edges by sewing on even using a line of glue.
    Hope that helps!
